Presented is a superb Mughal style necklace with a 22K gold pendant. This piece was made and purchased in India.
This style of jewelry has been popular for well over a century, so it is difficult to determine the age of this piece - it could be from the 1880s, or it could be from the 20th century.
Whatever the case it is truly exceptional!
Five centuries ago, India was under the rule and influence of the Mughal dynasty. The Mughal royalty were connoisseurs of architecture, arts, food, clothing, and, of course, jewelry. During the Mughal rule, jewelry-making was given utmost importance. This art gave birth to unique jewelry pieces studded with chunky gemstones and enameled with motif designs. Royal family members and people of high rank proudly displayed such jewelry all over their bodies, from jeweled turbans and head jewelry to thick-set toe rings.
Mughal jewellery was characterised by enamelling, gemstone encrustation and use of important precious stones that were often carved with royal insignia.
The necklace is 22" long and made of pearl and ruby cabochons.
The earrings are 1" long and comprised of a pearl and ruby cabochons as well.
The pendant is set with 20 polki style diamonds, totaling about one carat diamond weight. The reverse of the pendant is strikingly decorated with classic meenakari enamel in opaque white and translucent green and red, with small accents in a rich shade of blue. Even the sides of the pendant feature a vibrant design.
The necklace closes with a large hook-and-eye mechanism.
Gold pendant has been professionally tested and confirmed as solid 22K.
The pendant weighs approximately 17grams.
The remaining findings are gold plated.
The necklace is in wonderful overall condition, as are the accompanying earrings.
